Dr. Smith's early interest in science and biology and a desire to help people inspired his decision to become a physician. He has particular interests in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal and liver disorders - particularly IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology and colon cancer. 

Dr. Smith has a personal commitment to provide his patients and their families with education and support about their health issues to allow them to become more active participants in their own care.​

A native of the Fredericksburg area, Dr. Smith followed his father, local allergist Dr. Peter R. Smith into a medical career. Dr. Smith enjoys spending time with his family, including his wife, three children and two dogs. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys fishing and cooking.
